There is a great deal of confusion and misinformation about the different whirlpool technologies. What sets PUREWATER BATHS apart is we are the only whirlpool bath that was specifically designed for safety. Every wetted part of PUREWATER BATHS’ Pipeless system can be accessed for visual inspection and completely cleaned while the circulation systems of piped and air tubs cannot.
What are the different types of whirlpool baths?
There are three types of whirlpool baths; piped whirlpool baths, air tubs and Pipeless™ whirlpool baths. Highlighted are the basic mechanics of each and the difference between the other systems and PUREWATER BATHS’ Pipeless™ technology.
- Piped whirlpool baths are designed with an extensive network of pipes, fittings and a pump that are all concealed behind the walls of the tub. The pipes and pump are filled with water during operation and do not completely empty when the bath is drained. More than a cup of dirty water containing bath residue and bacteria remains trapped inside most piped circulation systems. The warm, dark and humid environment inside the piping provides the perfect place for the residue to collect and bacteria to thrive. This unsanitary residue returns to the bath water during the next use where it can put the bather’s health at risk.
- Air tubs are equipped with a blower used to inject air under the surface of the water to create air bubbles. Loud air blowers force air through a network of air channels that run behind the walls of the tub and out into the bath water via tiny holes drilled through the tub’s surface. These air channels backfill with water, do not completely empty when the tub is drained, and cannot be thoroughly cleaned or visually inspected. Air-dry cycles, claiming to clean the unit, only serve to dry residue and bacteria to the channel. The residue re-enters the bath water on the next use.
- Pipeless™ whirlpool systems do not use the pump and piping systems used in piped whirlpools nor do they use loud blowers and air channels used in air tubs. Instead, individual motors power each Pipeless™ jet, drawing water in and propelling it back out the nozzle. Every wetted part of a Pipeless system can be easily removed, visually inspected and quickly cleaned and disinfected to assure a completely safe bathing environment.
How does a PUREWATER BATHS whirlpool bath compare to a piped tub?

Health & Safety
More than a cup of dirty water containing bath residue and bacteria remains trapped inside most piped circulation systems after draining. The dark, warm and humid environment inside the pipes provides the perfect place for bacteria to thrive. This unsanitary residue and bacteria is returned to the bath water during the next use where it can put your health at risk. You may also get bacteria into your lungs by way of bubbles created in piped whirlpools. As the bubbles created in piped whirlpools burst on the surface of the water, bacteria is released into the air where it can be breathed into the lungs, putting you at an unnecessary risk of infection. In a PUREWATER BATHS Pipeless™ bath no air is injected in the water, no bacteria are aspirated into the lungs (from bursting bubbles) and no water is retained in the circulation system. Every wetted part of a Pipeless™ system can be easily removed, visually inspected and quickly cleaned after every use to assure a completely safe bathing environment.
The flow intensity (the amount of water pressure coming from the jets) of a typical piped tub varies because the jets are different distances from the pump. The jets closest to the pump produce higher flow levels and those furthest from the pump produce lower flows. PUREWATER BATHS’ provides individual motors for each jet to produce very consistent flow rates. PUREWATER BATHS’ Pipeless jets produce a consistent force of water that massages your muscles. Another disadvantage of piped whirlpool baths is that none of the jets can be controlled separately because they are all operating off the same pump. On Elite PUREWATER BATHS models all pairs of jets can be controlled separately. For example, the mid, back, and foot jets can be adjusted separately to concentrate on specific body parts. This allows you to experience more personalized and effective hydromassage.
A typical piped whirlpool bath produces 73 decibels of noise. This noise level is comparable to that of a factory. Loud motor noise makes it difficult to relax and enjoy a hydromassage bathing experience. PUREWATER BATHS’ patented Pipeless™ jets function smoothly and quietly. They only produce 55 decibels of sound - quieter than a normal conversation.
In a piped system the water is circulated through an extensive network of pipes, where air is also added to the water. The combination of these two processes accelerates the cooling of the bath water. Our Pipeless™ technology efficiently circulates the water without removing it from the shell of the tub. The water in a PUREWATER BATHS tub will remain almost constant for up to one hour.
How does a PUREWATER BATHS whirlpool bath compare to an air tub?

Health & Safety
The air channel used in Air tubs can never be fully cleaned. Bath residue and bacteria are dried to the channel after each use. During the next bath the residue and bacteria enter the water and are carried to the surface by bubbles. As the bubbles of air tubs burst on the surface of the water they can propel bacteria into the air you breathe, putting you at an unnecessary risk of infection. In a PUREWATER BATHS Pipeless™ bath no air is injected into the water and no water is retained in the circulation system. As a result, PUREWATER BATHS has completely minimized the danger of airborne microorganisms. Additionally, every wetted part of a Pipeless™ system can be easily removed, visually inspected and quickly cleaned after every use to ensure a completely safe bathing environment.
The bubbles of Air tubs do not provide effective hydromassage. They simply fill the water with bubbles that provide virtually no massaging benefits. The small holes in the bottom of an air tub do not provide the benefit of traditional water jets and they do not allow a strong force of air to provide a therapeutic massage. Although an air tub appears to be very turbulent water action, it is impossible for you to place yourself against a jet and feel like you are receiving a massage comparable to that of a Pipeless™ Jet. PUREWATER BATHS’ Pipeless™ jets create true hydromassage and you can enjoy a broad range of bathing experiences. For example, Pipeless™ jets can produce a driving force of water to massage muscles or more soothing flow patterns that allow for greater relaxation. On all Designer Elite models, the jets can be controlled separately, at key body locations, to maximize their hydrotherapeutic benefits. This allows you to experience more customized and effective hydromassage. Essential models provide two different flow settings for all jets, and the consistent flow created by Pipeless jets is superior to forced-air systems.

How does the strength of PUREWATER BATHS’ Pipeless jets compare to the jets of a piped whirlpool bath?
PUREWATER BATHS’ technology provides higher flow rates than comparable piped tubs. A PUREWATER BATHS 6-jet Pipeless whirlpool bath produces a maximum flow rate of 108 gallons per minute (gpm) and a typical 6 jet piped whirlpool bath pumps 60 gpm. The flow rate (the amount of water flowing from the jets) of a typical piped tub will vary because the jets are at different distances from the pump but PUREWATER BATHS’ flow rates do not vary because all jets are operated by independent motors. The typical piped whirlpool bath is equipped with a single pump that has a capacity to pull 60 gallons per minute (60 gpm) from the tub and disburse it back into the tub through the jets. If the tub has 6 jets and the pump is operated at 100% efficiency, a maximum of 10 gpm could flow from each jet (60 gpm pump capacity divided by the number of jets in the tub). Because the jets on a piped tub are located at different distances from the pump, their flow rates will vary. Each of our Pipeless™ jets will produce a flow of 18 gpm at high speed and about 11 gpm at low speed, rates that will have little variance since all the jets are operated by independent motors. Therefore, a 6-jet piped tub will typically produce a maximum of 60 gpm from all jets while a 6-jet PUREWATER BATHS will produce 108 gpm (6 jets x 18 gpm per jet), which is an 80% increase in the flow rate.
How much electricity does a PUREWATER BATHS whirlpool bath consume compared to piped tub?
PUREWATER BATHS baths are extremely efficient. A six jet PUREWATER BATHS whirlpool bath will consume 18% less electricity than a typical 6 jet piped whirlpool bath. Our technical specifications say that each PUREWATER BATHS jet motor operates at 120 volts with a line current of 1 amp. If your PUREWATER BATHS has 4 jets, it will utilize about 300 watts of power and, if equipped with 6 jets, about 450 watts of power. By comparison, the typical ¾ hp, 120-volt pump motor used on a piped whirlpool bath will consume about 550 watts of power. Therefore, based on a 6-jet tub, the power usage compared to the total flow from the jets for a piped tub equals an operating efficiency of about 9 watts per gallon of flow (550 watts/60 gpm) compared to the efficiency of a PUREWATER BATHS at 3.75 watts per gallon of flow (450 watts/108 gpm). Therefore, a PUREWATER BATHS will operate approximately 58% more efficiently than will a piped whirlpool bath.
